11th Grade students at Summit K2 showed up on the first day of school to find Mr Riz, the new executive director, standing at the front of their math class without a permanent teacher in sight.
After Ms Sens and Ms Lock left as Math teachers, K2 tried to hire 2 replacement teachers over the summer. They hired one, Ms O, the new 9th grade Math Teacher. While Mr Jones moved up to 10th grade and Ms Jojo up to 12th.
K2 is still trying to hire a new 10th grade math teacher. They even attempted to advertise on LinkedIn, a professional networking and career development site.
The school administration informed Math 3 students that Mr Riz will be teaching their Math class. Mr Riz has more than 7 years of experience teaching, 3 of which was at K2.
Summit K2 has always had a problem with a high teacher turnover rate, but this year is like no other. Last year, 7 of 18 teachers left Summit K2.
Other schools are having similar issues. Speaking to the San Francisco Chronicle, Daryl Camp, a superintendent in San Lorenzo Unified School District, said “I volunteer to cover classrooms because we’re short all over the place”
“Teachers are voluntarily giving up their prep periods to teach classes for absent colleagues,” Berkeley Unified Superintendent Brent Stephens said while talking to Mercury News. “We’ve resorted to putting uncovered classes in the library or career center where students can study independently. Neither of these are acceptable remedies for the situation.”
Mr Riz said that K2 expects to have a new math teacher in the coming weeks.
Sweet site, super style and design, real clean and apply friendly.
