Teachers have had differing opinions on the newly implemented wall and room format in the Summit K2 dungeon.
We interviewed Mr. Chávez, the teacher of Spanish II and AP Spanish. When we asked how he felt when he first saw the new rooms, he told us, “My first thought was, ‘I have a classroom.’ We didn’t have classrooms [last year], so… throughout the week, I’d probably go to at least seven different classrooms and teach.”
Mr. Chávez expressed that if he had not gotten a classroom of his own, he would likely not be working at Summit K2 anymore. Furthermore, he expressed that he had no issues with the format of their classrooms and the new walls.
Ms. Ohuafi, Math II teacher and freshman mentor, has also gotten a new classroom this school year. Although she acknowledges that it was a necessary change for the Spanish teachers, she says that her new classroom at U1B and the first Dungeon floor is in a “fragile” state.
“I was just … in shock, ‘cause of the size of my classroom and the fact that I just didn’t have a class to set up … I was just trying to make the best out of it.” She explained that she did not know of this arrangement prior and learned of it at the same time as Mr. Chávez.
The smaller classroom brings its own set of problems for Ms. Ohuafi. She said, “The split in [the] two [rooms] was already … extra management, having no wall, having no door. I [still] have no door. Apparently, it’s a fire hazard.” She further explained that the blue walls and lack of doors causes a lot of noise problems. On a more positive note, she said that her freshmen were thankfully adjusting quickly and she hopes the situation is “figured out” soon.
However, despite the negative reactions from some teachers such as Ms. Ohuafi, Principal Lee reminded us of the main reason for the walls, emphasizing their importance. She said that, compared to how it was before the class of 2024, when all teachers had to change classrooms every school day, now most of them have their own classrooms.
Additionally, Principal Lee plans that before she departs from Summit K2 in 2027, she will have implemented dry walls that would divide the space in the dungeon equally.
